Pericyte loss contributes to breakdown of blood-retinal barrier (BRB) and damage to the endothelium, and formation of acellular capillaries. These vascular changes caused by pericyte loss lead to ischemia, proliferative vascularization of retina, and retinal detachment and loss of vision.
